Latin name: Epimedium sagittatum.
Energy: warm. Taste: sharp – sweet.
Horny goat weed (Epimedium) is a pungent ornamental herb found in Asia and the Mediterranean. The Chinese call it Yin Yang Huo, which loosely means "licentious goat plant." Legend has it that the name came from Chinese goat farmers herder who noticed his goats becoming more sexually active after eating the plant. Although this herb has a history of traditional use for disorders of the kidneys, joints and liver, its principle use is as an aphrodisiac and to combat fatigue.
Horny Goat Weed's combination of botanical ingredients may enhance sexual performance through a variety of mechanisms such as increased testosterone production, increased energy and increased sexual hormone production.
Most practitioners recommend 6-12 grams of epimedium depending on the condition being treated. The herb can be decocted in water for an oral dose; ormacerated in wine for an infusion; simmered into a soft extract, or mashed into a powder.
